6th Grade Learning Goals

Language Arts

In the area of reading, the following reading strategies will be utilized:

  • Reader's Workshop (students reading novels of their choice);
  • Literature Circles (students reading the same leveled novels in small groups), and
  • Guided Reading using the District's Hougton Mifflin Reading series.
  • In grammar the students learn sentence structure and parts of speech.

In the area of writing the students learn different genres of writing including:

  • Research reporting
  • Descriptive essays
  • Narrative essays
  • Persuasive essays
  • Expository essays
  • Poetry

Math

The sixth grade uses a variety of methods to teach math.  To meet the needs of students we utilize a wide variety of materials that help our students practice the concepts taught in class:

  • Scott Forseman, textbook
  • Algebra Puzzles Problems
  • Reproducibles
  • Mountain Math

Social Studies

The sixth grade focus is on the study Ancient Civilizations of the world. This includes work with geography as well, with many activities to increase our students ability to read and understand different types of maps. The curriculum includes the study of prehistory through the fall of the Roman Empire

  • The Changing Earth
  • Landforms
  • Volcanoes
